Global News Apologizes
For Anti-Trudeau Tweet
Global News deletes a tweet and apologizes for violating its own editorial guidelines.
Tweet Breached Journalistic Policy
On November 6th, 2017, the Twitter account of Global News tweeted what appeared to be a highly unusual and editorialized tweet linking to a commentary piece by Charles Adler.
The original tweet said, "PM Selfie, why don't you take one next to the stash of millions of dollars being hidden by Trudeau-loving Liberals?"
The same tweet appeared just hours later and was worded exactly as the original, before both were deleted and Global News tweeted an apology and clarification of how it usually presents editorials and commentary from opinion writers. Before the tweet's deletion, many users took issue with the tweet, comparing it to something that would normally be put out by Ezra Levant's Rebel Media. Other users called it highly unusual and questioned whether the account had been hacked.
A new version of the tweet contained the word "Commentary" in all capitals and made more clear, toned down references to the content of the article by opinion columnist, Charles Adler. The new tweet said, "COMMENTARY: @CharlesAdler sees similarities between Denis Coderre and Justin Trudeau".
The refined tweet followed an apology by Global News that said, "We sincerely apologize for the lack of transparency and confusion this caused."
